The Irate Worker

Just another workday….

Sunday was fairly typical, not too many rude customers, but still had a few annoying ones. I think the best part of the shift was when this guy rang up about $90ish worth of stuff, and he couldn’t find his $100 bill. He started panicking, and he, the woman behind him and I looked all over, when a random tall guy with a broken arm in a cast said “Is this anyones?” The man said “Oh my God thank you” and was relieved to have his money back. Then the customers and I got into a discussion about how nice it is for someone to catch a break like that. I even told one customer the time that my mom and I were in Florida driving back to the airport, and someone cut us off right near the toll because they were in the wrong lane. We were upset until we got up to the booth and the woman said we were taken care of, that the person in front of us who cut us off paid for our toll and apologized. Then we had gotten into other discussions where people weren’t so nice, one woman telling us someone gotten beaten up for cutting off someone.

Yesterday (Thurs.) I walked in and was told to go express. I hate express and I will tell you why now. My first customer had more than 12 items. The damn sign says 12 items or less, not 12 items or more. My next customer was using a debit card, and claimed that the machine didn’t ask if the amount was okay. I told him “It had to have, because my drawer wouldn’t open unless you approved the amount.” He insisted that the machine didn’t ask him if it was okay. I said you definitely pressed it because I can’t, the customer controls the machine. I just press a button on my end. That’s it. Then he didn’t like my packing. (Because apparently he’s Jewish, and I had put his meat in a separate bag within another bag that had cheese. Which, we should all know, is not Kosher…oh well, I can’t tell that you’re Jewish, wasn’t like he was wearing a yamika or anything.) (If I had known, I would’ve made sure it was separate.) (Well too bad, you pissed me off as it is, get the hell out of here.) Then I had a consist line of morons who can’t read the bright red sign that reads “12 items or less”, and one woman try to claim I just put it on. “No, it’s been on” “Do you want me to leave?” “It’s okay, you already have half your stuff up”(idiot, if I could include). After about an hour or so rush, things died down. Finally I was allowed to go back to regular cashiering. Then I hate the baggers I get sometimes. Some are not even worth having. I had “creepy dude that acts stupid and gives you an attitude bagger” and then the “I don’t know how to do anything I have only been working for this company for 10 years and drop an attitude with anyone and slow at bagging and can’t find where bananas are Blame everyone else bagger” last night. Creepy dude stands there and looks at you until you yell at him to bag; he always acts as if he just started but if you try to help him out he tries to act like he actually knows something. Then he was standing there waiting to punch out and gave Sue an attitude when she asked him why he hasn’t punched out yet. He told her “You are not my boss.” (Sidenote: Actually, in a sense we are. Baggers not only have to listen to the managers, but have to do what the cashier asks them to do as well, in example, put something away, or help a customer out with their carriage. They are technically not to refuse such orders or face getting in trouble.)

Mr. Knows Nothing didn’t know until yesterday that his job is primarily bagging, everything else is secondary. Although I have to include, that baggers don’t just bag. So for you people to expect having a bagger, here’s reasons why you won’t get one: They have to do carriages, I mean, how do you think those get to the building? Magic? They also have to do trash, make sure bags are at the registers, along with register tape. They are in charge of the bottle room, and clean registers sometimes. They may also have jobs of doing returns, putting back crap you people won’t take. They are also the ones when a porter (basically a janitor) isn’t there, that they take over that job too. They also have to get the baskets at the registers. So if you every ask where the hell the bagger is, those are just some of the options.

There is also the option of: WE HAVE A LIFE. WE ARE ENTITLED TO A DAY OFF. OUR WORK REVOLVES AROUND US, WE DO NOT REVOLVE AROUND WORK. WE HAVE OUR SICK DAYS, AND WE ARE ENTITLED TO VACATIONS. THEY ALSO NEVER HIRE ENOUGH PEOPLE, SO SHUT UP. IF YOU THINK WE WANT TO BE HERE, GET A CLUE, WE DON’T.

That was the basic highlights of yesterday. Today is Friday, and it’s a six and half hour shift with a meager 15 minute break.  We’ll see what happens next. There is also supposed to be a snowstorm tonight, which means work is going to be hell.
